Loki reading order - Marvel comics
“Odin, ruler of Asgard, adopted the offspring of the slain Frost Giant King to be a brother to his own son, but even as a child, Loki wanted more. He trained in the dark arts, his eye on Asgard’s throne, destined to bring chaos to the fabled Realm. Loki has opposed not only Thor but many of Earth’s champions, as well as creating a few of his own. The crafty Prince’s magicks know no equal, and his guile and greed exceed all others. Able to reincarnate in many forms, Loki is the thorn on the rose you never suspect.”
From the old Marvel 101 video.
The new one contains an inaccuracy (as of Nov 11th, 2022): Marvel-Loki's father's name is Laufey, not Ulik
Loki in Earth-616
Note: the issues are mostly ordered chronologically in regards to the stories themselves, meaning they try to follow Loki's paths across the different runs and alternate between themselves. But with the still ongoing runs it's a bit more difficult to discern what happens before, what in the middle and what in the end. So issues of the same runs are generally grouped together, and in case reordered if need be (and I figure out how).
Another Note: Earth-616 was the designation for the main universe in which the main comic storylines took place. Earth-199999 was the designation for the MCU/Marvel Cinematic Universe within the expanded Marvel Multiverse. In recent years, there seems to have been an attempt and a push to steal the 616 designation from the comics for the MCU.
The author of this list calls bullshit. Whoever it was that thought that would be a good idea–it isn't. It's a mess. The original numbers were a means to keep track of things and trying to move them around (and for what? Arrogance? Greed? Hubris? Curse you) is only making everything more difficult for the poor idiots that try to follow comics storylines. This author will die on this hill.
This list uses Earth-616 to designate the main comic storylines appearances only.

If you know about other appearances I've missed, please let me know by commenting, or sending a message on Tumblr. With the MCU expanding and using keywords from the comics it has become more and more difficult to spot comic appearances.

Weight (at full grown): 240 kg (ca. 525 lbs)
Height (at full grown): 190 cm (6‘4“)
Weight (at full grown): 240 kg (ca. 525 lbs)
Age: Used to be around the millennium, he's been reborn a couple times so who knows anymore
616 Status: Alive;
MU Origins: various versions. The most recent one is that he used time travel tricks to have Odin adopt him after the war with the Frost Giants. He grew up alongside Thor, under Asgard's racism and prejudices, and with time he became jealous and mad, falling from grace and then starting on a path of "healing", remaining on the chaotic neutral alignment instead of skirting along the evil alignments. Undergoing several evolutions, more or less painful, through ego-death and the end of the world and its rebooting, Loki is now a Teller of Tales, a godly skald.
MCU Origins: After the war with Jotunheim, Odin found a baby Loki in a temple and decided to take him, presumably as a political pawn, ending up adopting him as the second prince of Asgard through a yet unknown manner. His alignment skirts mostly along the good side of the chart. At the end of the MCU tv series, Loki sits at the center of time holding all timeline branches in the form of a tree (hinting at Yggdrasil), powering them as the God of Stories/God of All Time.

Powers: Telekinesis, telepathy, illusions, shapeshifting, mind-control, conjuration, astral projection, hypnosis, molecular rearrangement, energy blasts, levitating, cryokinesis and teleportation. Loki can connect to others telepathically and see into their memories, mystically imbue objects, and create rifts between dimensions.
He has extraordinary genius level intellect.
After becoming God of Stories, he established his skill set as oriented toward that of an enhanced reality warper.

After becoming God of Stories, he established his skill set as oriented toward that of an enhanced reality warper.
Abilities: He's trained as a warrior and as a magician (seidrmadr). In the MCU, his combat skills with daggers and spears are often shown. In Earth-616, he can hold his own against the likes of Thor and the Disir and occasionally prevail. It also seems Loki cannot be really killed, having found a way to elude death.
Weaknesses: "So unmatched is Loki that he is his own worst enemy" is the common saying. Essentially, he's (in)famous for often undermining himself. He has no evident or easily exploitable weaknesses known, apart from the limits intrinsic to his physiology, skills and power (meaning he can be worn out or injured to the point of defeat).
For more extended stats on Loki's skills and powers, you can consult the Character Level Wiki page dedicated to Classic Loki (the First Loki). Classic Loki's power level is superior to that of Kid Loki and Guilty Ikol, but inferior to God of Stories Loki's.
1) 1949 Loki
2.1) Classic Loki - First version: Silver Age
With the well-known green and gold outfit and the great horned helmet, paired with the older style drawings, this Loki is immediately recognizable.
He appeared in the Silver Age in Journey Into Mystery #85 in 1962 until Asgard's fall from its dimensional plane to Earth.
2.2) Classic Loki - Second version: Lady Loki
We're not dealing with Female Form Loki: this is a male-identifying Loki in Sif's stolen body, which he snatched when Thor called forth all the Asgardians after restoring Asgard (now called Asgardia) in Broxton, Oklahoma. Sif's soul/spirit was pushed into an old woman's body.

Versions
There are several versions of Loki in the Earth-616 universe: in truth, there's four main Lokis, but they get slightly altered during plotlines.
1) 1949 Loki
Appeared once in Venus #6 in 1949 and then was never seen again, so he gets to be his own independent incarnation.

Loki needed a new face to regain a bit of credibility after the stunt he'd pulled with Asgard's fall, but it was still Ye Olde Loki's spirit/soul in there. (S)He appeared from Asgardia, end of the Dark Reign arc, to the end of the Siege arc in 2010.
2.3) Classic Loki - Third version: Siege
Also called Loki Prime, First Loki, Siege Loki or The Loki Who Burned. He was firmly convinced that Asgard didn't belong on Earth and decided to manipulate both the Asgardians and Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers in an attempt to get it back where it should have been. Goodish intentions and, predictably, not-so-good plan execution: the Siege of Asgard causes the permanent death of the Classic version of Loki.
2.4) Ikol the magpie
A phantom of the First Loki remained (t'was no accident) and eventually found the reincarnated Kid Loki, who renamed it Ikol. The phantom had the form of a magpie–whose symbolism is closely associated to Loki's–and followed the Kid around, dispensing advice and snide remarks.
In truth, the magpie was a hallucination, the Kid's mind's way of processing the phantom, its knowledge and the memories that were stuck in his head, seen by the Kid as nightmares.
3) Kid Loki
The Kid's origins are a bit unclear. Was it Loki's machinations at work or was it Thor's desperate willpower that called him forth?
The steadiest version is a mix of the two: Loki's spirit was quiescent, waiting to come back after the Siege, and heard Thor's call, that "woke" it from its slumber, wherever it was slumbering (space, the void, the outskirts to the afterlife, somewhere) and gave it a sign it was time to come back... as a little kid.
Was it just Loki's need of a clean slate or did Thor's desire to have his little brother back that influenced Loki's new form? Unclear. Thor's vision of Loki probably influenced the Kid's mind and personality, making him absolutely innocent and with good intentions, but it's still undeniably the young god who earned the title of God of Mischief.
The Kid's powers are limited by his memory loss and small size, even though his physical abilities, strength and intellect are still superhuman.
Kid Loki appears from Thor #617 to Journey Into Mystery #645.

4.1) Young Adult Loki - Guilty Ikol
Commonly and mistakenly called Teen Loki, as he's in his physical early twenties, Young Adult Loki first appears in the Young Avengers Vol. 2 run and his general looks are the ones still used currently (even if in varying shades of prettiness).
Why is he called Guilty Ikol?
Even though we see the Kid well into the Young Avengers run, that's not really the Kid but Ikol the phantom magpie, that implanted itself into the empty body, carrying with it an impression of the First Loki's memories and knowledge.
But just like the Kid was haunted by the phantom, Ikol is haunted by what he did, with his guilt manifesting not only in a ghostly form of the Kid, but also in a more real, violent way that involves giving life to his own regret.
It is likely, too, that instead of completely replacing the Kid Ikol merged with him. This is never clarified, but it's also unlikely that a copy of the First Loki would really go through the painful path that Young Adult Loki decides to take towards redemption and inner peace. It could also be fantastical meta narration, with the self having to "kill" its childhood version to face the harsh outer world, but for now it's a personal conjecture.
One of this incarnation's main characteristics, then, is guilt. Along with a personal desire and drive to change, it spurs the character and the plot on, earning him his distinctive namesake of Guilty Ikol.
4.2) Young Adult Loki - God of Stories
After some big existential and identity crisis–and a new friend along the way–Ikol reemerges victorious. God of Stories Loki is also Goddess of Stories Loki, the "actual" genderfluid 616 Loki.
(Actually the first time we see her is in the Tenth Realm tie-in, but in AoA she gets formally introduced). We don't see her for a while, until April 2022.
In the 2019 solo run, Loki says "all [pronouns] are acceptable". It is a personal preference to use either he or she depending on the physical appearance of the one being talked about.
God of Stories is back to being Loki instead of Ikol: nobody apart from the Kid actually called him Ikol in-universe, but that's technically who he was until his big trial through the Ego Death.
God of Stories Loki's powers are "unlocked": through the Agent of Asgard run the real potential of Loki is identified and disclosed, and it appears officially recognized by the comic writers (go read King Thor 2019 and read the end carefully!). So this version is the most powerful until now, around the highest level of the god-tier, even if his powers haven't been outright shown in visible displays, but in subtler ways.
4.3) Young Adult Loki - God of Myths
Loki God of Stories went through some... things. They led him to having (another) existential crisis, that brought him to question his own godsake and title, half-establishing it as God of Outcasts. This happened in the Loki (2019) run, and first appears outside his solo run in Thor (2020) #1, although he's not got much panel-time (and Thor was kinda mean to him).
Loki is now King of Jotunheim, even if a reluctant one, due to a double blood-claim: he's both the son of the previous King Laufey, and he killed him in the War of the Realms arc.
He struggles with the new responsibilities that come with ruling a kingdom, alcoholism, and has made a deal with the Children of Eternity in the House of Ideas.
The 2019 solo run was cancelled (for futile reasons, may I add) and thus it's unlikely we'll see how the story (that seemed to be on the same high narrative levels of the AoA run) was going to pan out.
In Thor (2020) #9, Loki calls himself the God of Myths, but also says that he “can still smell a lie across the stars”.
Loki in Thor (2020) #9 |
4.4 - The Return of 4.2 and the Defenders: Beyond storyline - God of Stories/ The Storyteller - Loki of the Eight Cosmos
In the April 2022 issue of Thor (Thor 2020 #24), we see two Lokis. One is 4.3, and the other 4.2, and they're having a one-way chat.
Apparently there's been some glitching after the end of the world (the Seventh Cosmos, more precisely), and the Loki in the liminal white space is still 4.2 and is involved in the Defenders Beyond storyline, while 4.3 has been around since the universe reboot.
It appears there's only one Verity, that has been existing outside along with 4.3, according to a panel in the April 2022 Thor issue.
In issue #5 of the Defenders: Beyond storyline, we see Loki catch a glimpse of 4.3 Loki while he's busy with the Infinity Wars (2018) storyline and looking back at her.
4.3 is named by 4.2 as the "Loki of the Eight cosmos".
And at the end of the story, 4.2 is "reabsorbed" into 4.3, creating a Loki with added awareness of past actions and implications, that can be considered Loki 4.4, the Storyteller.
In Immortal Thor (from August 2023), Loki is defined the Teller of the Tales, and the Skald of the Realms by Thor, and declares a clear contempt for the role of ruler of Jotunheim. Their appearance is androgynous, and the narrative states they are a deity of stories who does not take sides within them, for any character.
Loki in The Immortal Thor #13 |
To be continued
May-flies, What Ifs and Possible Futures
- There is another, kind of may-fly version that originates from Young Adult Loki: King Loki. He appears in the Agent of Asgard run, serving as the main antagonist ("So unmatched is Loki..."), and he's effectively Guilty Ikol's future self. King Loki's meddling, however, actually helps Guilty Ikol become Loki God of Stories;
- From Loki (2019), we see a possible-future Loki that time travels in an attempt at warning his past self of something that has to do with Thor. As the run was (rudely) interrupted, it's unlikely we'll see how it'd go;
- From King Thor (2019), we see Necro-Loki, supposedly at the end of times, bickering with Thor and Gorr the God Butcher;
- In Asgardians of the Galaxy, we apparently meet Kid Loki again, only to discover he's only a shard of the real one, sent to deal with business on the other side of the galaxy that the main Loki is too busy to manage in person (in light of the April 2022 Thor issue, the case might be different, but uncleared still);
- Thor and Loki - Double Trouble seems to take place in an alternate universe extremely similar to 616–with Young Adult Loki, a Thor similar to early modern runs, a Lady Loki and a Lady Thor, but doesn't seem to have any impact on actual 616 storylines;
- Lokis in forms of alligators and cats wander around in the 616 comics.
